Shell Shantz Sulfur Remelt Pit Development

Devcon was contracted to support the development of a sulfur remelt pit at the Shell Shantz site. The
scope included discovery excavation, removal of contaminated and unsuitable materials, removal and
reinstallation of concrete lock blocks, construction of a hopper loading ramp, and final site restoration.
The project required careful coordination and precision work on an active industrial site, with a strong focus on safety, environmental compliance, and efficiency. All work was completed within a compressed schedule while maintaining quality standards and long term site functionality.

Devcon process

1

Discovery excavation and site exposure

Initial excavation was completed to expose existing conditions and confirm subsurface requirements. This phase allowed the team to assess material composition, access constraints, and tie in new work accurately within the active site.
2

Identification and removal of contaminated materials

Contaminated and unsuitable materials were carefully identified, segregated, and removed in accordance with environmental and safety requirements. Material handling and disposal were executed to maintain compliance while minimizing disruption to surrounding operations.
3

Lock block removal and reinstallation

Concrete lock blocks were systematically removed and staged to allow access for excavation and construction. Following completion of subsurface work, blocks were reinstalled to restore structural containment and site functionality.
4

Hopper loading ramp construction

A hopper loading ramp was constructed to support efficient material handling and operational use. Work included base preparation, grading, and placement to ensure durability, alignment, and long term performance.
5

Fine grading and site restoration

Final grading was completed to achieve proper drainage, access, and finished elevations. The surrounding area was restored to meet site requirements and support ongoing industrial operations.
6

Final clean up and close out

The site was cleaned, inspected, and prepared for turnover. Final checks ensured all work met safety, quality, and performance standards prior to closeout.
